Kanji Kimono Vest

I made this #1007 Kimono Vest from a white washer linen. It was stamped with Kanji Blocks in both light and dark versions to give a checked effect. The red accents are Reverse Round Kanji stamps that are masked (see technique below). The band has been embellished with machine sashiko using white pearl cotton on the black linen band. The perfect closure are Kanji Buttons accented by Prairie Point Button Covers found in the book Fantastic Fabric Textures.

In making my fabric, I only went up part way with the checkerboard effect, then I spaced the stamped design in a random pattern.
Detail of the front. The Kanji Buttons are accented by the Prairie Point Button covers. A tiny bit of the "fire trees" red fabric was also used inset next to the band.
Detail of the band during construction. I used white pearl cotton to do the machine sashiko. I chalked in 3" wide areas on a 45 degree angle and alternated the stitching direction on every other one.

Here's how to make your fabric!

First, the small round Kanji was stamped in a random pattern in red textile paint. After the round Kanji are dry, cut round "masks" slightly larger than the stamp from Mask It.
Begin stamping the Kanji Blocks with black textile paint at the bottom, alternating light and dark for a checkerboard effect. Use squares of scrap paper the same size as your blocks to help arrange the "random" placement. These will help keep everything in line. Just place them down to fill up the "empty" spots, then stamp on the fabric where you'd like the next image.
When done, heat set your fabric and cut out your design!
