Cut each 1/4 yard piece into 8ths. (you'll now have 8 pieces approx. 5½ x 9" of each color) 1) Begin sewing these pieces together on the short end wrong sides together in a 1/4" seam. Trim seam to a narrow 1/8", press to one side. HINT: Sew about three pieces together first to see how much you'll need for you pattern. Fill the missing areas as needed with half-blocks. 2) Off-set blocks to get a "brick" effect. Sew strips together lengthwise, WRONG SIDES TOGETHER., in a 1/4" seam. Trim seam to a narrow 1/8", press to one side. 3) Cut front pattern piece out of block-pieced fabric. 4) Cut 1/2" strips of a contrast fabric (cut these on the straight of grain no need to make bias strips). Using a 1/4" bias tape maker, make several lengths of trim. HINT: Estimate how much you'll need by measuring the seams in your block-pieced fabric. 5) Sew trim to block-pieced fabric beginning with the crosswise seams. Finish sewing trim over the lengthwise seams, covering previous trim ends. Press. HINT: Use a 4.0 Double Needle to sew the trim, it's TWICE as fast! 6) Assemble garment as per pattern's instructions, omitting ribbing if desired. I finished my sleeves and lower edge with a 5/8" narrow hem. NOTE: Be sure to check sleeve length before cutting if you are not planning to use ribbing. |
