This embellishment is a series of tiny "blocks" made with your sewing machine's zig-zag stitch. A variety of threads can be used for added excitement! We did it on this Layers Long Vest, with Sulky rayon thread. You will need: Threads - in a variety of bright colors. Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Orange, Fuchsia, etc. Your choice can be normal sewing thread or shiny rayon for more sparkle. Bobbin Thread - To avoid having to constantly changing bobbins, try using a lightweight monofilament thread (my favorite is made by Sulky) in the bobbin. Test first, some machines are finicky, and the needle tension may need to be adjusted. Fabric - My favorite look is black with the really bright colors of thread. High contrast and stunning. Any fabric can be used. Some soft fabrics, such as rayon, may need to be stabilized before stitching. Sewing Machine - You need one that has a zig-zag feature. |

STEP 1 Set your machine to it's widest zig-zag setting, and shorten the stitch length so it forms a "satin" stitch. Make a few "practice" stitches to get the balance right. NOTE: If you use different weights of threads, you will need to recheck the balance when you change colors. STEP 2 Cut out your garment pieces. Using a chalk pencil (dark fabrics) or fabric marker you will make a random amount of "dots" all over the piece. The placement is up to you. Space dots approximately 2 - 3" apart (this too, is your choice for "coverage"). STEP 3 Load a color of thread into the needle. Sew a satin stitched "block". Stopping the stitching when you have a "square". HINT: I like to sometimes leave a "tail" about 2" long hanging from the block. When you have a lot of them all over, it has a lot of movement and feels more like floating confetti! Skip to another area and stitch another block. Fill in blocks in a random pattern, leaving enough space to add other colors. Try for a balanced placement. Load a different color of thread into the needle. Repeat the steps above. Continue in this manner with all your chosen threads. STEP 4 Stand back and look at your work. Does it feel "finished"? Do you have any obvious open spaces? Do you need more of another color? Make any additions necessary, and complete the other garment pieces in the same manner. STEP 5 Assemble your garment and enjoy the feeling of being at a perpetual party!
