Leaf
printing is a fast easy way to create a stunning image. The materials
are right outside your door! You
can also use the same technique to make "fish prints", but
I like the never-ending (and less stinky) supply of nature!
STEP
1
Choose
leaves that are relatively flat and that have prominent "veining".
Avoid leaves that are prickly like holly or extremely fragile. Leaves
with "bug holes" make interesting prints too!

STEP
2
You will be applying paint
to the back side of the leaves. This is generally where the veins
are most prominent, but be sure to look at your leaf to see which side
would reproduce best. Use a soft paintbrush or foam
brush to apply the paint and work on a protected surface (scrap
paper works great).
Sometimes
the first image doesn't turn out so hot. Not to worry! This is generally
due to the natural oils that are in the leaf. The next time you apply
paint it will adhere better. It's a good reason to make some test prints
for this reason.
STEP
3
Carefully pick up the leaf and place paint side down on your
fabric.
Cover with a piece of scrap paper and begin rubbing from the inside
to the outside edges. You can feel the leaf and veins through the paper,
make sure you get all the leaf transferred.
Remove
the paper and carefully lift the leaf from the fabric. Depending on
the leaves you've chosen (and how sturdy they are) you can make many
leaf prints from just a few leaves!
Continue adding leaves in any composition you find pleasing.
Let
paint dry thoroughly and heat set with an iron. Use your leaf printed
fabric in any manner you choose!
