Materials
Needed:
1
9 pc. Set of Mini Batiks (we
used Animals)
1 6 pc. Packet of Hand Dyes (10”
x 20” each) (we used Ice
Gum)
1/4 yard Stripe Fabric for Sashing
and Binding (we used Swing
n' Cat - Multi Stripes)
1/2 yard Fabric for Backing (we
used Fuchsia Swirl)
1/2 yard Batting
All
seams are 1/4” - Finished Size Approx. 16” x 18”
STEP
1
Cut all Mini Batiks evenly to 4½” x 5”
Cut 2 sets of 1” wide strips of all 6 Hand Dyes
Cut 2 sets of Stripe Fabric 3/4” wide x width of fabric (45”) for Sashing
Cut 2 sets of Stripe Fabric 1 3/4” wide x width of fabric (45”) for
Binding
STEP
2
Arrange Mini’s in a pleasing order 3 x 3. Choose a 1” strip of Hand
Dye to be the border for each mini. Mix colors so none of the same colors
are next to each other.

STEP
3
Sew Hand Dye borders to all four sides of mini’s. Press seams outward.
STEP
4
Sew 3/4” striped sashing to short horizontal edges of mini blocks. Press
seams outward.
HINT:
For perfect 1/4” sashing, use this quilter’s trick for painless sewing.
When sewing the block sets together, stitch with the wrong side
of the sashing facing up. This way you can see to use the previous line
of stitching as a guide. Keep your presser foot aligned with the stitching
line and your sashing will be evenly sewn!
STEP
5
Sew 3/4” striped sashing to lengthwise mini block sets, connecting all
three rows (remember to use HINT here too!). Press well.
STEP
6
Cut Batting and Backing slightly larger than mini quilt. Layer Backing,
Batting and Mini Quilt. Pin layers in place.
STEP
7
Quilt along edges of 1/4” striped sashing, both horizontally and vertically.
Machine baste raw edges. Trim off excess batting and backing even with
quilt top.
STEP
8
Fold Binding in half (wrong sides together), press. Stitch to edge of
quilt in the French Binding method. Beginning with long vertical sides
first, place binding strip on the WRONG side of quilt, raw edges even,
stitch in 1/4” seam, trim off corners to reduce bulk. Press toward outside.
Wrap binding around raw edge to RIGHT side of quilt, placing folded
edge of binding *just* beyond stitching line. Topstitch in place.
STEP
9
With leftover binding from Step 8, make two hanging loops. Fold under
raw edges, and fold in half, press. Topstitch along both edges. Cut
2 hanging loops 4” long. Fold each loop in half, pin to wrong side of
top corners of quilt, raw edges even.
Repeat binding for top and bottom edges, folding in at corners when
you wrap the binding over the raw edge. (You may need to trim out some
excess bulk to make it turn under at the corners). Flip loops up when
topstitching binding.
