Materials
Needed:
1/4
yd. Mottled Blue sky-like fabric
1/4 yard Tan or Rust color fabric (for the desert)
Scraps of "pony" color solids (browns, tans, rust, yellows,
etc.)
1/8 yard Print Fabric for Binding
(we used Desert Plant)
1/2 yard Fabric for Backing (we
used white cotton)
1/2 yard Batting
Stamp - Indian Pony and
Umber Textile Paint
Mask It
Steam-A-Seam
Optional: "Wave" Rotary Cutter
Finished Size Approx. 14” x 22”
This is
a fast to make project because it requires very little sewing. You will
be stamping and appliquéing to make a "fusible" wall
quilt!
STEP
1
Cut "desert" fabric to approximately 23" (9" x 23").
Cut a 2" wide strip of Steam-A-Seam and apply it to the back of
the top edge of the "desert". Trim off a curving amount from
the top, representing sand dunes.
Cut
Blue Sky fabric 9" x 23". Layer desert over Sky, fuse
in place.

STEP
2
Following directions on Mask It packaging, stamp and mask several
"ponies" on the desert background (do not stamp them in the
"sky").
STEP
3
Stamp ponies on various scraps of fabric.
STEP
4
Apply Steam-A-Seam to the back of your stamped "scrap" ponies.
Cut out around outside edge of stamped image. (we ended up using 12
appliqués, the rest of the ponies are stamped directly to the
background!).
STEP
5
Cut Batting and Backing slightly larger than mini quilt. Layer Backing,
Batting and Mini Quilt. Pin layers in place.
STEP
6
Stitch " sand dunes" by using curving lines between
the stamped ponies (it would look weird to have stitching running through
a pony). Stitch along the top edge of the "dunes" too, even
with the raw edge.
Quilt
the "sky" by stitching in curving lines.
STEP
7
Arrange the appliqué ponies on the quilt, having some layered
over the previous stamped ones. Fuse in place.

Layer
appliqué ponies over previous stamped ones.

Trim
quilt edges to an even 14" x 22" (notice how we have more
"desert" than "sky"?)
STEP
8
Cut 2 -1½" wide strips of binding fabric (x 45").
Cut 1½" wide strips of Steam-A-Seam and apply them to the
back of the binding.
Using
a "Wave" Rotary Cutter, trim one long edge of the binding.
(If you don't have a wave cutter, try pinking shears, or free-form cutting).
Beginning
with long horizontal edge, place binding on quilt, having curving
edge 1/2" inside raw edge of quilt. Lightly press with an iron
to hold in place, keeping remainder of binding free.
Wrap
remainder of binding around quilt to back side. Fuse in place.
Detail of "wave" cut binding.
Repeat
for vertical sides, folding in raw edge at corners.
Enjoy!
