RANDOM BLOCK PIECING

This is a great piecing technique for beginners. It doesn't require matching any seams!

Cut several coordinating fabrics in to 3 sizes of blocks. Each block is 3½" wide by the following lengths:

(For our "Blue Cats" jacket we used 1/4 yard of 9 different prints and solids).

Cut a variety of each fabric in all three sizes.

Layout your pieces in a pleasing arrangement, taking care NOT to have any seams that will match (yea!). Be sure to make the vertical rows long enough to fit your longest pattern piece.

Begin sewing each vertical row, right sides together in a 1/4" seam. Press seam to one side. HINT: I like to stack the pieces of my rows top to bottom, so I don't lose track of the arrangement. Try doing only 2 rows at a time to avoid confusion.

Sew the vertical rows together, right sides together in a 1/4" seam. Press seam to one side.

Cut pattern pieces out of pieced fabric. This is where you'll determine how much additional to piece. You may find you'll need to add a row or two.

Assemble garment as per patterns instructions.
