STEP 1
Cut 6 - 3” squares from vest fabrics. Stamp Vest on squares with Black
Textile Ink. Allow to dry. Apply Steam-A-Steam Double Stick Fusible Web
to back of stamped squares. Cut out vests close to stamped image. Set
aside.
STEP 2
Cut Batting & Backing 17” x 21”. Mark center.
STEP 3
Cut Background 8½” x 12½”. Mark stitching lines for vest “windows”. Mark
a line down center (4¼” from raw edge) and two horizontally 4¼” from raw
edges).
STEP 4
Remove paper backing from each vest. Place vests on background, centering
within each of the marked stitching lines. Press down with fingers, DO
NOT FUSE YET.
STEP 5
Center Background (with vests) over Batting/Backing. Pin in place. Machine
or Hand Quilt marked lines. Remove marking lines BEFORE fusing. Once markings
are removed, fuse vests in place.
STEP 6
- Checkered Border
Cut 1 strip of EACH vest fabric (6) 1” x 18”. Cut 6 strips of Background
Fabric 1” x 18”. Sew each strip together, alternating vest fabrics with
background. Press seams to one side. Cut strip set in half (you should
have two sets approx. 6½” x 9”) sew these two together, forming a longer
set (12½” x 9”). From this last set, cut 4 - 1” x 12½” strips for border.
STEP 7
Sew checkered border strips to background, placing first one strip along
each long vertical side (12½”) of the background. Right sides together,
raw edges even. Stitch through all thicknesses, press strip to outside.
Place next strips along top and bottom horizontal sides, matching squares
at corners so the checkered effect is in the same sequence. Stitch, right
sides together, raw edges even, through all thicknesses, press strip to
outside.
STEP 8
- Sashing
Cut 3 strips of Background fabric 3½” x 44”. Sew sashing strips to checkered
border, beginning with top and bottom horizontal edges. Stitch, right
sides together, raw edges even, through all thicknesses. Trim off excess,
press strip to outside. Place next two sashing strips along each long
vertical side. Stitch, right sides together, raw edges even, through all
thicknesses. Trim off excess, press strip to outside. Machine baste around
outside edge of sashing (1/8” from edge), through all thicknesses. Trim
off excess batting and backing.
STEP 9
- Binding
Cut Binding strips 1 3/4” x 44” . Fold in half (wrong sides together),
press. Stitch to edge of quilt in the French Binding method. Beginning
with long vertical sides first, place binding strip on the WRONG side
of quilt, raw edges even, stitch in 1/4” seam. Press toward outside. Wrap
binding around raw edge to RIGHT side of quilt, placing folded edge of
binding *just* beyond stitching line. Topstitch in place. Repeat for top
and bottom edges, folding in at corners when you wrap the binding over
the raw edge. (You may need to trim out some excess bulk to make it turn
under at the corners).
STEP 10
- Quilting
Using the Erasable Fabric Ink Pad, tap your vest stamp on the pad to ink
it up. Stamp a vest in each corner of the quilt. Allow to dry (this takes
only minutes). Machine or Hand Quilt stamped lines. Remove inked lines
by dabbing with a paper towel moistened with water. Enjoy!
